A military-style attack by the terrorist group known as the IslamicState of Iraq and the Levant resulted in the escape of between 500 and1,000 prisoners, including many Islamist militant terrorists, fromIraq’s Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. Suicide bombers drove cars withexplosives into the prison gates on Sunday night, while gunmenattacked guards with mortar fire as well as rocket propelled grenades.Fighting continued until early Monday. This release of hundreds ofterrorists cannot possibly help Iraq’s security situation, which hasbeen deteriorating badly since the withdrawal of American forces inDecember 2011.

Analysts are beginning to talk again of a civil war in Iraq. That’sjust as impossible today as when they were talking about it followingthe 2003 ground invasion. Iraq is in a generational Awakening era, during which a sustained civil war is impossible. In this case, thereare still many survivors still alive from the genocidal Iran/Iraq warof the 1980s, and those survivors will prevent anything like that fromhappening again. The same is true in Syria, where the civil war wouldhave fizzled two years ago if it hadn’t been for the aggressivesupport by Russia, and more recently Hezbollah, in providing weaponsand fighters, making Syria’s war less a civil war than a proxy war.Russia Today and Reuters

U.S. approves sending arms to opposition fighters in Syria

The Obama administration has set numerous red lines for the regime ofSyria’s president Bashar al-Assad, and then ignore violations of thered line, except to issue a statement of outrage and set a new redline. But now, on Tuesday, the House and Senate intelligencecommittees approved President Obama’s request to use money already inthe CIA’s budget to be used to send weapons to the Free Syrian Army. The weapons will include small arms, ammunition and perhaps anti-tankweapons. However, this development comes just three days after the EUadmitted that a May promise to send arms to the Free Syrian army was just a bluff, and that there wasnever any intention to fulfill the promise.
