McCain: Congress Should Consider Eliminating Foreign Aid to Egypt

On Fox News Sunday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Congress would have to look at getting rid of the nearly $1.3 billion in aid America sends to Egypt if more violence breaks out in the tumultuous nation.

Fearing more “horrendous” “bloodshed” in the coming weeks, McCain said Congress would “have to consider carefully the elimination of aid” and noted the Egyptians–as well as other nations in the Middle East–are “not appreciative of aid while demonizing the United States and Americans in the street.”

McCain said the aid was not just about money but also about a sense of granting those countries “legitimacy in the world.”

McCain, along with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), traveled to Cairo, Egypt this week, and McCain said after his trip that it was difficult to see the removal of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi as anything other than a coup.

The Muslim Brotherhood has called for protests against Egypt’s current military government this weekend, and the current government has indicated it would use force, if necessary, against the Muslim Brotherhood protesters.
