Poll: Majority Disapprove of Obama's Handling of Syria, Iran

According to a new CBS News/New York Times poll conducted September 19-23, Barack Obama’s handling of foreign policy with Syria and Iran has been so inept that more Americans now disapprove of his stewardship than approve of it.

49% of voters polled disapprove of Obama’s handling of foreign policy, with 40% approving. On July 20, the numbers were 44% disapproving and 43% approving.

With regard to Iran, 44% of those polled disapprove of Obama’s actions while only 39% approve. Only 22% think relations with Iran will get better. Unsurprisingly, only 16% of Republicans approve of Obama’s handling of foreign policy, but 66% of Democrats approve.

Although 82% of those polled favor a U.S./Russia agreement to deal with Syria’s chemical weapons, 66% think it is either not very likely or impossible that Syria will obey any such deal. Obama’s numbers on Syria show 52% of those polled disapprove of his actions with only 37% approving. 64% of voters say he has not explained what the U.S. goals in Syria are.
