Omar Shire Hussein, 60, formerly of the Calgary area, beheaded his four children, ages 6 to 11, and was arrested. The news disturbed the Canadian Somali community.
“That’s unheard of,” said Mohamed Jama, president of the Somali Canadian Society of Calgary.
“The community is very shocked, very shocked,” he said.
“I don’t know whether the guy is insane and we don’t know what’s behind the story.”
Hussein used to be a cab driver and his ex-wife and their mother, Khadro Xuseen, said he was stable and had a great personality. She lives in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, but Hussein murdered his children just north of the city. Jama said it is not normal to murder loved ones or children in the Somali community. He also said there is no one by the name of Hussein in the Calgary cab company. Mudhir Mohamed, former president of SCSC, found an Omar Shire Hussein in Fort McMurray, a city near Calgary.
