NSA Spied on Mexican President

A new document leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden shows that the NSA targeted the email account of Mexican President Felipe Calderone using Tailored Access Operations (TAO). The TAO department bragged, “TAO successfully exploited a key mail server in the Mexican Presidencia domain within the Mexican Presidential network to gain first-ever access to President Felipe Calderon’s public email account.”

In September, Snowden revealed that the NSA had spied on then-candidate Enrique Pena Nieto, who is now the Mexican president. Mexico is not the only Latin American target of the NSA; Brazil, too, has been targeted. US interests with regard to targeting intelligence from Mexico center on the drug trade and the country’s leadership. According to documents, the US monitored email and telephone communications from the massive Brazilian state-owned oil corporation.
