With Israel and the U.N. warning the U.S. that Iran cannot be trusted outside of an agreement “to halt uranium enrichment,” Obama and “his national security team counter than the risk is worth taking.”
In addition to going against Israel and the U.N, the administration is also working to get around congressional opposition.
According to the AP, prior to talks now underway, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Adviser Susan Rice “personally appealed to Senators in a White House meeting to hold off on seeking additional sanctions” in order to give Iran time to prove itself–to “test Iran’s seriousness in addressing concerns it is trying to develop nuclear weapons.”
Republican Senators are working to “keep penalties in place, and toughen them, unless Iran freezes its nuclear program completely.”
Likewise, Israel continues to stand by U.N. Security Council demands that Iran halt uranium enrichment as a prerequisite for serious talks or relief from sanctions.
