Some influential Senate Democrats are folding on new Iran sanctions under pressure from the Obama administration, giving tacit endorsement to a faulty nuclear deal with Iran that accepts nuclear enrichment by the regime–a position recently unthinkable, and against UN Security Council resolutions.
Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD), said that President Barack Obama and yesterday’s Senate testimony by Secretary of State John Kerry had convinced him to hold off on supporting new sanctions that would have affected Iran’s international oil sales.
A few, notably Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), remain committed in principle to new sanctions, and planned to unveil a new sanctions bill on Wednesday, together with Republicans. Yet they do not see a new sanctions bill passing this year.
The six-month Iran nuclear deal goes into effect on Jan. 15.
