Police officers ordered to guard empty Christmas packages

VIGO, Spain, Dec. 15 (UPI) —

Police in Vigo, Spain, say they have been ordered to guard a collection of empty Christmas presents for the past week.

Six police officers in the city have been watching the packages 24 hours a day, in 8-hour shifts, TheLocal.es reported Friday.

City Mayor Abel Cabellero made the call that the empty boxes be watched. Why he wanted the boxes watched was not reported.

The officers have called the job “humiliating and insulting.”

“This is not a matter for police; officers have other things to do,” an official told the local daily La Voz de Galicia.

Local retailers have also hired two security guards to keep an eye on the boxes.
