Police clashed with Muslim Brotherhood supporters during a January 3rd “Friday of igniting revolution,” leaving “at least 13 people dead and 57 injured.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, protesters rallied in support of restoring Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi to power. Morsi was ousted by the Egyptian military in July 2013.
Morsi “now faces trials on various charges, including espionage, aiding terrorism and inciting the killing of protesters during his yearlong rule.”
On Friday, “several thousand protesters” gathered at various districts in Cairo, and police met them with tear gas. Protesters then began hurling stones at police and set a police vehicle on fire. Several protesters were injured or killed amid the resulting gunfire. A number of police were injured, as well.
Egypt’s “Interior Ministry said that 122 Muslim Brotherhood members [were] detained in [the] protests.”
