A Pakistani court trying former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf for treason has ordered him to appear at a hearing next week despite his lawyers saying he was too sick to attend.

The court registrar announced its decision on Thursday.

Musharraf has been staying at a military heart clinic in nearby Rawalpindi. He was on his way to the court in Islamabad last Thursday but was instead rushed to the hospital with chest pains.

The prosecution says it was simply a ploy to avoid appearing in court. Defense lawyers have been pushing for Musharraf to be exempt from court proceedings or even leave the country for treatment.

The judges examined a medical report submitted by the hospital and said he must appear on Jan. 16.
