Iranian Diplomat Killed in Yemen Attack

Sanaa, January 18 (QNA) – An Iranian diplomat died Saturday of fatal injuries he sustained after an attack in the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, an official at the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed.

“The Iranian diplomat, who was attacked by unknown gunmen, has died due to severe injuries,” ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said, according to the Iranian Fars news agency.

“A terrorist group attacked an Iranian embassy’s diplomat in a Sana’a street and tried to kidnap him,” she said, noting that the assailants began shooting after they faced resistance.

“Iran is seriously following up the terrorist attack with the concerned Yemeni officials.” The attack occurred near the ambassador’s residence, in southern Sana’a’s Hadda district, Yemeni media reported.

The diplomat was taken to hospital where he died later. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Meanwhile, Yemen Foreign Ministry condemned the terrorist and criminal attack that claimed the life of an Iranian diplomat in Sana’a

“This operation targeted Yemeni-Iranian relations more than the diplomat,” Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi said, stressing that the security services would track down the perpetrators until being arrested and brought to justice, Yemen Saba news agency reported.(QNA)
