STANFORD, Fla., Feb. 21 (UPI) –
Authorities in Florida said an intoxicated man scaled a fence at an Army Reserve Training Center and drove off in a 5-ton Humvee.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said Jose Quinones, 19, climbed over a 7-foot fence topped with barbed wire at the training center in Stanford and rummaged through several military transports before finding a Humvee with a steering wheel anti-theft device that was loose enough to allow him to steer, the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday.
A spokeswoman for the center said the vehicles do not require keys to start.
Deputies said witnesses called 911 starting around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday and reported the Humvee driving without its lights on and blowing through red lights while dragging a construction barrel.
Quinones eventually stopped the vehicle in Deltona and got out when deputies drew their weapons on him.
The suspect was jailed on charges including grand theft, driving under the influence, driving an unregistered vehicle and marijuana possession.
