State Dept.: 'No Meaningful Improvement' in Iran's Human Rights Under 'Moderate' Rouhani

The State Department’s latest report on human rights worldwide presents a grim account of continuing abuses by Iran, which persisted in spite of–and during–the election of supposed “moderate” Hassan Rouhani. In fact, Rouhani’s election was listed first in the department’s summary of human rights problems in Iran in 2013.

“The most egregious human rights problems were the government’s manipulation of the electoral process, which severely limited citizens’ right to change their government peacefully through free and fair elections; restrictions on civil liberties, including the freedoms of assembly, speech, and press; and disregard for the physical integrity of persons whom it arbitrarily and unlawfully detained, tortured, or killed,” the report said.

According to Assistant Secretary of State Uzra Zeya, who is in charge of the human rights report, the U.S. has “seen little meaningful improvement” in human rights in Iran since Rouhani’s election in June 2014.
