U.S. Navy Warship Sent To Rescue Sick Baby Aboard Stranded Boat

On April 3, Eric and Charlotte Kaufman sent a “satellite ping” to alert the U.S. Coast Guard that they were stranded about 900 miles off the coast of Mexico with a sick one-year-old baby.

The Kaufman’s had undertaken “a cruise around the world.”

According to the NY Daily News, the U.S. Navy sent a warship to rescue the Kaufman’s, and the vessel reached them on the night of April 5th. The baby was being transferred to the U.S. ship at dawn on Sunday.

The Daily Mail reported that four members of the Air National Guard’s Pararescue Team jumped to the Kaufman’s boat on April 3, following the call for help, and remained aboard until the Navy ship arrived.

The child was stabilized, and was believed to have “contracted salmonella.”

The Kaufman’s were two weeks into a planned voyage around the world. They took their daughters–age one and three–with them.
