Chinese Defense Min. to Vietnamese Counterpart: 'Face Up to Reality' on Chinese Drilling

On May 19 Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Chang Wanquan (pictured) told Vietnamese Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh that Chinese “oil drilling in Chinese territory” is China’s right, and Vietnam needs to “face up to reality.”

According to Xinhua, the two officials spoke with one another at the ASEAN-China Defense Ministers’ Meeting.

Vietnam has allegedly “disrupted” China’s “normal and legitimate” drilling in waters near the Xisha Islands. Chang said “serious violence including vandalism, looting, and arson” followed the stoppage.

He said China condemns these acts and said Vietnam “should respect the history, face up to reality and look at the bigger picture of [the] China-Vietnam friendship instead of making repeated mistakes.”
