Russian PM Medvedev: 'We Are Slowly But Surely Approaching a Second Cold War'

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev spoke to Bloomberg News about the situation between Ukraine and Russia. He claimed a second Cold War was approaching because of poor decisions made by the Obama administration. He did not say if Russia would recognize Ukraine’s new president or its claims of sovereignty.

“We are not obliged to guarantee anyone anything because we never took those obligations upon ourselves in regard to this issue, but we are proceeding in the fact that the main goal is calming the situation in Ukraine, not guaranteeing anyone anything, but calming the situation,” Medvedev said during an interview with Bloomberg.

He did not confirm nor deny that Russia would absorb the Donetsk and Luhansk regions after the pro-Russian forces held a referendum on May 11. Pro-Russians claim over 90% of the citizens voted for independence from Ukraine, and a few hours later they asked Moscow to join the Russian Federation. Moscow has not given the new “Donetsk People’s Republic” an answer but did say Russia recognized the referendum.
