Kenyan Governor Charged with Terrorism

Governor Issa Timamy of Lamu, Kenya, has been charged with murder and terrorism for “attacks in the coastal Lamu district” earlier this month.

According to BBC News, these attacks “killed at least 60 people, as gunmen descended on hotels and a police station.” The outlet also reports that “non-Muslims were singled out to be killed.”

Timamy is a popular political figure who “belongs to a political affiliate” of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s “Jubilee Coalition.” He will be kept “in police custody until June 30,” as the investigation into the attacks is ongoing.

President Kenyatta reacted to the attacks by blaming them on “political networks,” rather than terrorism.
