Nigeria Seeks $1 Billion to Fight Boko Haram

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is seeking a $1 billion loan from abroad to fund his country’s military efforts against Boko Haram.

Jonathan says the money will enable Nigeria’s military “to more forcefully confront this serious threat.”

According to the Houston Chronicle, Nigeria has a military budget of “about $6.3 billion a year, but large sums are lost to endemic corruption.”

Jonathan wants a $1 billion loan that has to be applied to military efforts.

His request comes months after Boko Haram abducted over 200 school girls–whom the Nigerian military has been unable to find or recover–and follows five years of Boko Haram expansion in Nigeria.
