China Sending 'Spy Ship' to Monitor U.S. Exercises off Coast of Hawaii

China is sending a spy ship to monitor U.S. ship exercises off the coast of Hawaii.

The Chinese say that because the exercises are being held in international waters, they have a right do surveillance of them.

According to BBC News, China is both taking part in the U.S.-led naval exercise and sending a “surveillance ship” to monitor the event.

The U.S. admitted “this is the first time… a participating country has also sent a vessel to monitor the exercise.” But U.S. Pacific Fleet chief spokesman Captain Darryn James said the U.S. had taken “all necessary precautions to protect… critical information.”

The Wall Street Journal described the Chinese surveillance ship as a “party crasher… enjoying an intelligence buffet at the world’s largest maritime gathering.”
