On July 21, Army Staff Sergeant Ryan M. Pitts received the Medal of Honor and said he did not want the nation to remember his name, “but those of the nine men who were killed in one of the fiercest fights of the war in Afghanistan.”
Pitts received the Medal of Honor for heroic actions under fire on July 13, 2008, in Afghan’s Kunar Province.
According to CNN, Pitts “was wounded in one arm and both legs and near death,” yet “lobbed grenades at militants so close he could hear them talking.” He also continued to “fire a machine gun at the enemy.”
Nine of his fellow soldiers paid with their lives in that battle.
After receiving the Medal of Honor Pitts said: “Valor was everywhere that day and the real heroes are the nine men who made the ultimate sacrifice so the rest of us could come home.”
Prior to receiving the medal Pitts told Stars and Stripes that he is going to teach his son to remember “those who didn’t stop fighting until their last breath.”
Breitbart News is humbled by Pitts’ selflessness, and the sacrifice of his nine fellow soldiers that morning in Afghanistan. We are free because of the courage and commitment of men like these.
