Security Service Foils Two Terror Plots Against Sweden

Sweden’s Security Service confirms that two terror attacks planned by Islamists within the country have been foiled.

The Local reports that “a chief operating officer of the Security Service” told Aftonbladet newspaper that the two plots were discovered via “research and intelligence gathering.”

The chief operating officer did not reveal details about the alleged plots–whether they were to be from improvised explosions, car bombs, suicide attacks, etc.–but he made clear that both plots “were intended to be carried out inside Sweden.”

He added: “We are talking about terrorist attacks. That alone makes it serious.”

In December 2010 The Local reported a terror attack in Stockholm that involved both a suicide bomber and a car explosion. Minutes before the attack “Swedish news agency TT received an email telling Muslims in Sweden and Europe it was ‘time to take action.'”

Fortunately, the suicide bomber killed only himself and the car bomb killed no one.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt commented on the 2010 attack by tweeting: “Failed–but could have been truly catastrophic.”
