Canadian Lawmakers Made Spears from Flagpoles as PM Harper Hid in Closet during Attack

Canadian lawmakers fashioned flagpoles into spears and Prime Minister Stephen Harper hid in a closet as Islamic attacker Michael Zehaf-Bibeau charged through Parliament on October 22.

According to the New York Post, “Conservative members of Parliament” pulled flagpoles down from the wall, “sharpening them into spears,” as Zehaf-Bibeau made his way through. They then stood behind doors and waited, ready for the shooter.

The Globe and Mail quoted one MP as saying, “There were 15 flags up at caucus and all but two were taken down,” adding, “These guys were up there holding these spears ready to impale anyone who came in.” The source did not elaborate on how effective the “spears” may have been had push come to shove; he simply said, “It was that or get mowed down.”

Throughout a period of approximately 15 minutes, Canadian PM Harper hid in a closet in the room where lawmakers waited with their spears. The Post reported that lawmakers were aware that someone was hiding in the closet, but they were not aware that it was Harper until the ordeal was over.
