The Mayor of Béziers, France, has placed posters around his town bragging about the size of the new guns his police officers are carrying.

Mayor Robert Menard’s posters are meant to make it clear that attitudes have changed in France, and police in his town have gone from possibly being armed to certainly being armed with new guns.

According to thelocalfr.com, Menard’s posters are emblazoned with a photo of the new gun and the caption, “From now on municipal police have a new friend.” The gun shoots a 7.65 caliber bullet.

Photos of the posters were circulated on Facebook and Twitter, leading to one response which read: “Bezier’s cops have turned into Dirty Harry. Menard has let it be known with a measured poster campaign.”

There were also explicitly negative comments on social media about Menard’s advertisement of more heavily armed police, but the mayor is undaunted. He said, “Yes, our town likes law and order. The rules have changed,” and the posters which make this known are “appropriate.”
