Rep. Brian Babin on Refugee Program: ‘I Just Don’t Want to See the Repetition of What’s Happening in Western Europe’

Congressman Brian Babin (R-TX) talked about his effort to pause the refugee resettlement program until security concerns can be addressed on Wednesday’s Breitbart News Daily with SiriusXM host Alex Marlow.

Babin said Marlow was “not wrong” to say supporters of the refugee program expect Americans to absorb a certain number of terrorist attacks without complaint, as a consequence of bringing so many unvetted people into the country so quickly.

“I think that Mr. Obama wants us to believe there’s a New Normal, that we’re going to have to have an acceptance of a certain amount of this type of radical Islamic violence in this country,” Babin said.

He addressed the apparent difficulty law enforcement has in catching independent terrorists and how easily such threats can slip into the country on a tide of mass migration:

Our law enforcement agencies seem to do a great job after the fact. I must give them accolades because they have thwarted many, many attempts, but when you have someone that’s off the radar, or a “lone wolf” acting on his own, just getting radicalized by his imam, or on the Internet, it’s hard to find these people until after the fact. And then they’re great, they always seem to be caught or apprehended or shot, which I think is probably good justice.

But this is a problem that this country’s facing. I dropped a bill, a year and three months ago, to put a pause on this refugee program, which is basically a U.N. program. It’s been in the committee for a good while. I think the leadership wants to get something into the C.R. with this. It’s going to depend on the negotiations with the Democrats.

I’m telling you, I think the American people are ready to see us stop this program. It’s endangering a lot of people. We don’t have to look any further than Western Europe to see what’s happening over there, with millions of unassimilating folks that get in no-go zones even the police are afraid to go into.

Do we really want to be so willfully blind, to see that happening here in the United States? I don’t think so.

Babin said he thinks the American electorate is beginning to understand the consequences of Obama’s refugee policy:

I’m just talking for Texas, okay? I can tell you it’s a huge issue in my district, and in the state of Texas. I really think it’s 65 percent to 70 percent across this country. You know, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that, hey, when you look at things like San Bernardino, and Orlando, and Chattanooga, the Boston Marathon, and then look at the terrible, horrible things that are happening Europe — Nice, Paris, Brussels — it’s a no-brainer.

ISIS has pledged, promised to infiltrate. Our three top security chiefs in this country — the FBI, James Comey; the DNI, Mr. Clapper; and Jeh Johnson, the secretary of DHS — all have said, they’re on record saying that they’re gonna have a hard time catching everybody, and vetting these people properly.

So my goodness, I don’t know what it’s gonna take for this President to wake up and see — I’m glad he’s got great compassion for these people. I do, too. This letter that I’ve circulated, I have 37 signatories on it, to urge the Republican leadership in the House to get this into the spending bill. I think it shows that we have a problem, a clear and present danger, and you know, we just have to stop this. It’s our duty, our sworn duty when we give our oath of office, to uphold the Constitution, and the Number One duty there is the national security and the safety of our people.

In my letter, I specified that we will continue to have humanitarian funding in the safe zones, in these refugee camps, to help these people with medicine, with clothing, with shelter. It’s a no-brainer when it comes to the cost, too, because we can help 12 or more refugees over there, in safe zones, for every one that’s on a path of citizenship, that we bring into the United States.

It’s our duty to do this, and that’s what I’m going to try to do. Whether it’s successful, I don’t know.

He suggested that people who want to get involved in this effort should call their representatives in the House and Senate.

“I just feel like it’s an endangerment,” Babin said. “I’ve had people say, oh, well, your refugee bill wouldn’t have stopped some of these things. Well, it’s a start. It’s a problem. It’s not just the refugee program, it’s our broken immigration, our dysfunctional immigration system. It’s our visa program. It’s our asylum seekers. Couple that with the refugee programs, and we’re getting a lot of folks in here that we don’t know who they are, we don’t know where they come from, or what your intentions are.”

“I just don’t want to see the repetition, in the United States, of what’s happening in Western Europe,” he warned.
