NASHVILLE, Dec. 22 (UPI) — Ten people were hospitalized when they were struck by a large tree which fell on them on the Vanderbilt University campus in Nashville.
The prospective students, their parents and a tour guide were part of a group of 120 people on a campus tour Monday morning. The group was leaving an information session in the school’s Old Gym building, when a hackberry tree on the alumni lawn uprooted and fell.
Ten people were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, four by ambulance, with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Six of the injured were released by the afternoon.
The weight of the tree, described by school officials in a statement as “rain-soaked,” likely caused it to fall.
