20-year-old Russian soccer player Gasan Magomedov dies in machine gun fire

NORTH CAUCASUS, Russia, Jan. 4 (UPI) — A soccer player for the Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, 20-year-old Gasan Magomedov, died from gunshot wounds on Saturday.

He was driving home when his car was struck with machine gun fire from unknown shooters. He died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

The region of Dagestan where he lived is known for guerrilla warfare led by Islamic fundamentalists, which may have been the origin of the gunfire.

“One thing can be said with confidence – Magomedov could not have provoked anything like this in any way,” Anzhi Makhachkala said in a statement.

No arrests have been made, the club stated, and there are no reports of others being caught in the gunfire.
