LONDON, Nov. 5 (UPI) — Fiat Chrysler Automotive’s new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR struck record lap speeds at multiple racetracks throughout the United States.
The record times, including a one-minute-33-second run at the Inde Motorsport Ranch in Arizona and a one-minute-28-second lap at Laguna Seca in Califonia, were certified by the Sports Car Club of America. The vehicle beat records made by Porsche’s 918 Spyder and the McLaren P1.
Head of passenger car brands for FCA, Tim Kuniskis, told Road and Track, “The new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR holds more track records than any other production car in the world.”
Kuniskis said the company expected the ACR to be the fastest street-legal Viper with 645 horsepower and 600 lbs./ft. of torque.
The company says the car produces “the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world.”
Despite the high performance, Kuniskis said the car can handle all day track duty in “ambient temprrature of 100 degrees Fahreneheit.”
The onboard enginge is an all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10 engine with overhead valves. A Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual gearbox links the car to the road.
The car also features a six-foot-wide adjustable spoiler, six-piston caliper brakes from Brembo, and low profile, 295/25/19 Kumho tires. The company says one of the available trims, dubbed the Extreme Aero Package, “produces the highest aerodynamic downforce of any production car,” yielding more than 1,200 pounds of downforce at 150 mph and more than 1,700 pounds at its top speed of 177 mph.
Production of the Viper and the current ACR version will end in 2017 amid declining sales figures.
The ACR model was first introduced in 1999 as a high-performance version of Dodge’s consumer-level Viper coupe.
