3 Russian Olympic race-walk champs suspended in doping probe

MOSCOW (AP) — The IAAF says three Russian Olympic champion race-walkers have been provisionally suspended as part of an investigation into doping in Russian athletics.

The three are Sergei Kirdyapkin, who won gold in the men’s 50-kilometer race at the 2012 London Olympics, and Valery Borchin and Olga Kaniskina, who won men’s and women’s gold in the 20K race at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

IAAF spokesman Chris Turner tells The Associated Press the three are among five Russian walkers who have been under investigation since late 2012. The other two are Sergei Bakulin and Vladimir Kanaykin, who won gold and silver medals at the 2011 world championship.

All five cases relate to irregularities in the athletes’ biological passports, which measure blood values over time to look for evidence of doping.
