ADEN, Yemen, Sept. 28 (UPI) — Saudi-led Arab coalition fighter jets struck a wedding ceremony in the southern Yemen province of Taiz Monday, killing at least 35 people and injuring dozens.
Multiple airstrikes hit two large celebration halls in the Wagha village of Mocha. Aside from the dead, mostly women and children were injured, reported Xinhua sourcing an anonymous tribe member with knowledge of the events. Another resident estimated the number of deaths and injured individuals at 75.
The attacks marks the third time in ten days that a large amount of civilians are killed by coalition bombing runs.
The halls themselves were completely destroyed, leaving bodies scattered around the area.
The news comes just a day after coalition helicopters used explosives to destroy various houses in the northwestern province of Hajjeh. The civilian death toll was reported at 28 with 17 injured, with fleeing residents being fired at by helicopters in the village of Bani Zelaa.
The coalition seeks to eradicate militant Houthis from Yemen and restore President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s rule. To that end, they launched attacks against Houthis and their allies on Monday, and an army office told Xinhua that Houthis have been retreating from their locations in the oil-rich province of Marib as coalition attacks continue.
Shiite Houthis ousted Hadi in September and took over half of Yemen, including the capital city of Sanaa. Hadi has since been in refuge at Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon has criticized the bombings, saying that despite all involved groups’ disregard for human life, the airstrikes are the thing killing the greatest amount of people.
