WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) — Winning the lottery doesn’t always have happy ending.
With the first Powerball prize of 2016 going unclaimed Saturday, and the new award nearing a record-breaking $400 million, here’s a look at five lotto winners who are proof that you can’t always take lotto money to the bank.
1. The loser
In March of 2015 the California Lottery donated a $1 million Powerball jackpot to schools after the winner lost the ticket and was not able to find it by the 180-day deadline.
2. The Leftover
The manager of a California gas station revealed in May that an unidentified man who had won a $75,000 prize was accidentally given a $75 award instead.
3. The Overlooker
A thief who stole a pair of sunglasses from a car in Seattle last May, failed to notice the winning $1 million Powerball ticket that was laying under the glasses.
4. The Underage
A 20-year-old man from Iowa was denied his $100,000 lottery winnings in December after officials discovered he was too young to buy a ticket. After attempting to claim his prize, the man faced underage gambling charges.
5. The Forgetful
A Michigan woman became a $1 million lottery winner in September after finding a forgotten winning ticket that sat in a pile of mail for nearly four months.
