CARMEL, Calif., July 25 (UPI) — At least 11,000 acres have burned in Big Sur in Northern California as firefighters battle a wildfire just 5 percent under control.
The so-called Soberanes Fire began about 8:30 a.m. Friday and currently threatens at least 1,650 homes with pre-evacuation warnings across several portions of Monterey County near Highway 1. Many have already evacuated.
Officials said they expect the fire to be completely contained by July 31.
Helicopters for Cal Fire circled the air between the Pacific Ocean and Garrapata State Park east of Highway 1, scooping up water and dousing flames all weekend.
Currently there are 1,367 fire personnel battling the blaze, including five teams of five engines and 22 firefighters have been deployed to the area from Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
One of the strike teams deployed is a San Francisco Fire Department team specially trained in protecting structures.
