8 injured as Southwest plane leaves Nashville runway

NASHVILLE, Dec. 16 (UPI) — A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 left the runway after landing at Nashville International Airport, injuring at least eight passengers, officials said.

Flight 31, carrying 133 passengers and five crew members, arrived from Houston late Tuesday afternoon and rolled into the grass while taxiing to its gate. The plane’s emergency slide, as well as a stairway, was used to remove the passengers, who were bused to the airport terminal. Passengers said they heard a loud noise as the plane taxied, prior to feeling it tilt as it stopped in a ditch.

The injured passengers were taken to TriStar Summit Medical Center, and sustained bruises and other minor injuries, with one complaining of chest pains, Nashville Fire Department spokesman Brian Haas said.

Preliminary findings suggest either a tire on the plane burst or a wheel collapsed. The plane was scheduled to travel to Jacksonville, Fla., after it arrived in Nashville, with 28 of the passengers continuing their flight.
