WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (UPI) — Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh installment in the legendary franchise, sent fans into a frenzy in unique ways.
Metal band Galactic Empire’s heavy metal reimagining of John Williams iconic Star Wars theme was just one of many examples.

Doctors channel the Force through ‘Star Wars’ music
Researchers at Austin Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, published a study showing that doctors who listened to music from Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith were more productive than those who listened to pop music.
The study found that doctors listening to Star Wars music while performing colonoscopies discovered 25 percent more polyps and 49 percent more adenoma than those who listened to pop music.
“The soundtracks from such movies often contain uplifting musical tracks associated with glory, success and large-scale victory,” researchers wrote as an explanation for the increased success.

Bulgarian soccer fans embrace the Dark Side
Fans of Bulgaria’s FC CSKA Sofia showed their support for the empire by donning paper storm-trooper masks as they unfurled a massive portrait of iconic villain Darth Vader during a match against Sozopol.
The celebration also featured a pyrotechnics display and a version of the team’s chant sung to the tune of “Vader’s Theme.”

British Parliament’s ‘Shoebacca’
British Parliament member Angela Rayner, 35, was so upset after missing out on a pair of Star Wars-themed high heels featuring R2D2 that she wrote a letter to the store that sold them on House of Commons letterhead.
“I have only ever bought your shoes and I am loathed to do so again, or recommend your shoes to others. I am writing to let you know that treating customers in that way will only cost you more in the long term,” she wrote.
While Wookiees aren’t often heralded for their use of diplomacy, Rayner earned the nickname “Shoebacca” following the incident.

Missing out on Star Wars collectibles was never really a problem for Dave Oldbur, who offered fans of the films the opportunity to spend the night in his shrine in Southampton.
For $54 a night, a fan was able to rent a room in his home containing $230,000 worth of rare posters, toys, action figures, books and life-size Storm troopers from the films.
The Homestay listing also offered a light breakfast, as long as fans were willing to observe Oldbur’s house rules, which prohibited smoking and indoor lightsaber usage.
An elegant weapon for a more civilized age
Allen Pan would likely put Oldbury’s rules to the test with his “Real Burning Lightsaber.”
The California engineer, who also recreated Thor’s Hammer, created a flame-fuled lightsaber that features a replica handle and produces sounds from the films.
It also produces a real flame using methanol, acetone and butane that Pan used to burn things, including storm-trooper balloons and a photo of Jar Jar Binks.

A drone hobbyist cleverly decorated his drones as iconic ships from the Star Wars films.
Oliver C, created polystyrene drone covers resembling a Tie Interceptor as well as the Millennium Falcon to disguise his drones without using Jedi mind tricks.
Pulled over in a galaxy far, far, away
Texas police celebrated the release of Star Wars by “pulling over” an SUV full of characters from the film.
The staged dash cam video shows Chewbacca and Han Solo being stopped by police while driving to a premiere for Star Wars: The Force Awakens along with villains Darth Vader and Darth Maul.
The officer decides to let them off with a warning and accompany the group to the premiere as a Jawa sneaks into the police cruiser and drives away.

From Sith Lord to city council
The fictional Empire of the Star Wars film took a very real role in Ukrainian government as Emperor Palpatine was named to a seat on Odessa’s city council.
Aleksandr Borovik, 25, using the name and likeness of the Sith Lord, won 54 percent of the vote, earning a spot in the Ukrainian government.
Borovik was one of 50 candidates in the election to run under a name taken from Star Wars.
