LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2 (UPI) — ABC Family will not bring back Chasing Life for a third time after its sophomore season underwhelmed viewers.
Deadline reports the cancer drama’s second chapter attracted less than 500,000 total viewers upon its final episode, 50 percent fewer than its first season finale and a new low for the show. The network, which recently introduced a biographical comedy series covering rapper Nicki Minaj’s upbringing, cut the show.
Chasing Life is an English-language adaption of the Mexican TV series Terminales and features actress Italia Ricci as its youthful protagonist suddenly diagnosed with cancer. Monday marked not only Life’s second season finale, but that of the entire series.
“With this finale, I wanted to go out as big as possible with as many question marks as possible,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told The Hollywood Reporter. “Any time I ask a question on a show, I typically know what the answer is. There’s a lot to explore in season three, like April’s emotional state and her big decision to end treatment,” he continued.
Chasing Life was produced by BV Family Productions, Lionsgate, Televisa and its home network.
