Activists: Syrian airstrikes on Damascus suburbs kill 22

BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian activists say government warplanes have carried out airstrikes on two suburbs of the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing at least 22 people.

The Local Coordination Committees says the airstrikes took place on Friday, targeting the suburbs of Kfar Batna and Jisreen. The activist group says a market and residential areas were hit.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported on the strikes, saying 35 people were killed, including six children.

Conflicting casualty figures are not uncommon in the aftermath of attacks in Syria.

Rebel-held suburbs of Damascus have been subjected to intense airstrikes over the past weeks that killed hundreds. Syria’s civil war, now in its fifth year, has killed more than 250,000 people.
