Adele wins big at BBC Awards despite absence

BIRMINGHAM, England, Dec. 11 (UPI) — Singer Adele Adkins was honored with two awards during the BBC Music Awards Thursday night despite not being able to attend.

The “Hello” songstress was deemed this year’s British artist of the year as well as the winner of the Best Live Performance award for her BBC One special which aired Nov. 21.

Adele sent a message to fans in the face of her absence at the award show, reportedly expressing regret for not being in attendance. “Sorry I’m not there, I’m absolutely gutted,” she is quoted as saying, “but thanks so much for my award.”

The singer released her highly anticipated third studio album, 25, in November. The record quickly became a top-selling international phenomenon, recently hitting 5 million copies sold in the United States.

The BBC Music Awards also honored American singer Taylor Swift as the International Artist of the Year. Swift, currently wrapping up her world tour in Australia, was also unable to attend.
