‘Affluenza’ teen Ethan Couch, mother captured in Mexico

FORT WORTH, Texas, Dec. 29 (UPI) — The so-called “affluenza” teen who killed four in a drunk driving crash and his mother have been detained in Mexico after the teen skipped a meeting with his probation officer earlier this month.

Ethan Couch, 18, and his mother, Tonya, were being held in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta. Officials have been searching for him since early December when he missed an appointment with his probation officer in a 2013 drunk driving crash that also critically injured two.

The lawyers for Couch, 16 at the time, famously used his privileged upbringing as a successful court defense to keep him out of jail, saying he was too wealthy to understand the consequences of drunk driving.

Tarrant County, Texas, officials have been searching for Couch since Dec. 16, when his probation officer found the home he and his mother shared was empty. Investigators said he fled after a video surfaced that appeared to show him playing a beer-drinking game, a possible parole violation that may have landed him in jail.
