Afghan ministers visit Pakistan to discuss recent Taliban attacks

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 13 (UPI) — Several Afghan leaders will visit Pakistan Thursday in order to push leaders into subduing the Taliban following various violent attacks in Afghanistan’s Kabul.

The delegation traveling to Pakistan includes Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, acting Defense Minister Masoom Stanekzai and the head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS).

The delegation wants Pakistan to take action against the Taliban and reverse its alleged support and funding of terrorist groups active in Afghanistan. They also disapprove of the peace talks brokered by Pakistan with the Taliban, but Pakistan’s national security advisor Sartaj Aziz wants these talks to continue and for the Afghan government to be a part of them.

The exchange marks the first contact between government leaders of each country after the Taliban confirmed the death of their leader Mullah Muhammad Omar. Pakistan suspended the peace talks in observation of Omar’s death.

Under their new leader, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, the Taliban have redoubled attacks in Pakistan’s Kabul.

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s NDS blamed the Pakistani military of being involved in bombings which have killed more than 50 people. During their meeting, the delegation will show proof to Pakistan’s government of their involvement in the attacks. However, the delegation will not meet with leaders of the Pakistani military.
