Afghanistan: Security forces capture Taliban governor, kill commander

JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Nov. 3 (UPI) — Afghan officials on Tuesday said security forces captured a Taliban governor and a key commander during two days of operations in eastern portions of the country.

Xinhua news agency, quoting a government statement, reports Afghanistan’s National Directorate for Security and its intelligence agency apprehended Aminuallah Kuchi and two of his bodyguards in the Behsoud district of the country’s Nangarhar province.

For more than a decade Kuchi served as the Taliban’s “shadowy” governor in the Khost, Balkh and Laghman provinces, organizing several killings and subversive activities, according to the statement.

Security forces said they killed Taliban commander Qari Ahmadullah, who also went by the name “Bilal,” during a firefight Monday outside the provincial capital of Ghazni province, where last month up to 2,000 attacking Taliban militants were beaten back after withdrawing from Kunduz.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior Affairs on Tuesday said up to 36 armed insurgents were killed, four injured and three arrested during the past 24 hours of anti-terrorism operations across the country, including in the Nangarhar and Ghazni provinces.

Taliban spokesmen have yet to comment on the government’s statements.
