SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Silicon Valley startup says it’s shutting down operations and shifting to a new business model after it was blamed earlier this year for turning Lenovo computer users into targets for annoying web ads — and hackers.
Superfish co-founder Adi Pinhas says he wants to find new uses for the company’s “visual search” software, which can recognize a picture and search for similar images without relying on text labels. Pinhas says he hopes to license the technology to others and will promote it through a new company that’s building smartphone apps consumers can use to identify plants or shop for clothing.
Superfish still faces consumer lawsuits filed after researchers found a security flaw in its software on Lenovo laptops, which could have exposed users to hackers.
