Farnborough (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Airbus finalised Wednesday a $6.6-billion order for 62 A320neo airplanes from Synergy Aerospace Corporation, which is the largest shareholder of Colombia-based carrier Avianca and owner of Avianca Brasil.

The order, worth the equivalent of 6.0 billion euros, was confirmed in a statement on the third day of the Farnborough air show held south of London.

“These A320neo will allow Avianca Brasil to take an important leap toward growing and modernising its fleet in a profitable and sustainable manner, while improving passenger experience,” said Alex Bialer, chairman of Synergy Group.

“Thanks to its excellent eco-efficiency, reliability and comfort the A320neo Family will allow us to strengthen our position in South America by offering passengers the best single-aisle product available.”

The Toulouse-based planemaker added that the purchase of the single-aisle fuel-efficient A320neo jets would bring the total number of Airbus aircraft sold in South America to above 1,000.

“Domestic traffic in Brazil is projected to nearly triple by 2034, placing it among the world’s top 10 fastest-growing traffic flows in the world”, said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, at Airbus.

“These A320neo will allow Avianca Brasil to capitalise on this growth and deliver enhanced performance capabilities in challenging airports such as Rio de Janeiro’s Santos Dumont.”
