All bodies in Indonesian plane crash recovered

JAYAPURA , Indonesia, Aug. 20 (UPI) — All 54 bodies of victims of a plane crash in Indonesia, earlier this week, have been recovered and brought to the city of Jayapura.

Four bodies were evacuated from the crash scene Wednesday; the remaining victims arrived Thursday in three aircraft and delivered to a hospital to begin an identification process. The ATR42-300 propeller-driven plane of Tigana Air, flight number IL267, lost radio contact Sunday during a short flight and crashed into a mountain in a remote part of Indonesia’s Pengunungan Bintang province.

The plane’s flight data recorder remains missing, contrary to earlier reports that it had been found. Each of the 44 adult passengers, five children and five crew members aboard the plane was Indonesian.

Aboard the plane was 6.5 billion rupiahs ($470,000) in cash, destined for distribution by the Indonesian postal service to about 6,600 impoverished families in the mountainous area, a typical transfer for a region lacking banks. Each registered family was to receive 600,000 rupiahs ($50) each, with many families already receiving their allotment.

There is no indication any cash was recovered.
