Amtrak train crashes in Philadelphia; several people appear to be injured

There’s been a mix of injuries suffered when an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia.

Several people were seen being taken out of the train on stretchers. Others were able to walk on their own, some wobbly.

One man who was rolled past The Associated Press on a stretcher complained of neck pain.

The train was traveling from Washington, D.C., to New York City on Tuesday night when it derailed in the Port Richmond neighborhood.

At least two train cars were on their side and dozens of first responders’ flashlights could be seen bobbing in and around the wreckage.

Amtrak says it’s aware of the derailment of one of its trains in Philadelphia.

Amtrak says on Twitter that the train was traveling from Washington, D.C., to New York City on Tuesday night when it derailed in the Port Richmond neighborhood.

Amtrak provided no other immediate details on the crash of Train No. 188.

Philadelphia police are asking people to stay away from the crash scene so first responders have room to work.

Roads in the area are blocked off. Dozens of police and fire vehicles have responded to the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board says it’s gathering information about an Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia.

Several people appear to be injured in the crash of Train No. 188 from Washington, D.C., to New York City on Tuesday night.

An Associated Press employee on the train says the front of it “looks pretty bad.”

The front of the train was going into a turn when it shook.

An Associated Press employee on the train says it appears the train went off the tracks. Paul Cheung says he was fortunate to be at the back of the train and the front of it “looks pretty bad”.

Police swarming the Port Richmond area where the crash occurred are telling people to get back.

Former Congressman Patrick Murphy was on the train and says he has been helping people. He has been tweeting photos of firefighters helping people in the wreckage.

Amtrak hasn’t returned a call seeking comment.
