ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Garrett Richards of the Los Angeles Angels is working on a no-hitter through six innings against the Houston Astros.
Los Angeles leads 3-0 on Sunday.
Richards walked his first batter, then retired his next 15 before walking rookie Preston Tucker to open the sixth. But the right-hander struck out Robbie Grossman and Jake Marisnick before retiring Jose Altuve on a check-swing grounder. Richards has thrown 80 pitches, 52 for strikes.
He is trying to become the seventh pitcher to throw a no-hitter for the Angels, starting with Bo Belinsky in 1962. Clyde Wright did it in 1970, and Nolan Ryan had the next four. Mike Witt threw a perfect game on the final day of the 1984 season, and Ervin Santana (2011) was followed by Jered Weaver (2012).
