Anthony Anderson accepts Sam Smith’s BET award, says artist didn’t attend ‘because he’s white’

LOS ANGELES, June 29 (UPI) — Sam Smith won Best New Artist at the BET awards on Sunday, but was not on hand to accept the win, so Anthony Anderson did so on his behalf.

Anderson, who was co-hosting the award show, donned a wig and a sleek blue suit to resemble the British singer, telling the audience: “Sam Smith could not be here tonight because he’s white, and he didn’t think he would win at the BET Awards and he didn’t think he could win, but we showed him that we love him too.”

The Black-ish actor continued, “This is going to stay with me because you didn’t show up for BET. Although this trophy is yours it’s going to stay with me,” he joked, making a play on Smith’s hit song “Stay With Me.” “Sam Smith, congratulations brother on your much deserved award, you come by my house next week and pick it up.”

Smith, who was in the U.K. during the show, only found out about his win when he woke up Monday morning.

He took Anderson’s acceptance speech all in good fun and wrote on his Instagram: “YES!! I won a BET AWARD!! Sick news to wake up to!! Thank you so much for that!! Also……. @anthonyanderson I’m gonna need my award now man…. Haha best speech really sorry I couldn’t be there guys. 5 more days till I’m officially back in the game.”
