LOS ANGELES, Oct. 20 (UPI) — Anthony Mackie has now stated that he was only joking about endorsing Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, after seemingly supporting the candidate during an interview with BET.
The actor, best known for his role as Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Solider told BET Monday while promoting his new film Our Brand is Crisis that he’d want to run Trump’s campaign over Hillary Clinton’s if he were running for president and that the hotel mogul was an “easy sell” for voters.
“You can sell him as the guy who worked his way up from nothing,” he said. “I think if you’re a ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ candidate, people would identify with that.”
“I’m on the bandwagon,” Mackie added when asked if he was giving an endorsement to Trump. “I’m drinking the Kool-Aid.”
Mackie then faced backlash on Twitter with fans disappointed that he would show support for Trump. Hours after the interview hit, the 37-year-old addressed his comments on the social media site claiming that he was only merely joking.
“Sorry Donald, that wasn’t an endorsement. Just a bad attempt at a joke, I guess?,” Mackie posted.
Our Brand Is Crisis hits theaters on Oct. 30. Mackie will star once again as Falcon in Captain America: Civil War.
