AP Source: Muschamp agrees to become South Carolina coach

A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Will Muschamp has agreed to become South Carolina’s next head football coach.

The person says Muschamp could be formally introduced as early as Monday. The person spoke to The Associated Press Sunday on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized and the hire has not been publically announced.

The 44-year-old Muschamp gets a second chance to coach in the Southeastern Conference. The ex-Florida head coach spent last season as Auburn’s defensive coordinator after being fired by the Gators. He is the second straight Florida coach to take over the South Carolina program. Steve Spurrier resigned in October after 10-plus seasons in Columbia.

Shawn Elliott was named interim coach and was interviewed after going 1-5 down the stretch.
