Argentine president to address supporters amid criticism

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina’s outgoing president is facing criticism for deciding not to attend her successor’s inauguration.

President Cristina Fernandez’s planned to address supporters Wednesday night from the government house, or Casa Rosada. It will be her last public act before President-elect Mauricio Macri is inaugurated on Thursday.

Her administration has said she won’t attend the inauguration after a tiff between her and Macri over where the presidential baton and sash would be handed over. Macri wanted to receive them in the Casa Rosada from Fernandez. Fernandez insisted it be in Congress.

Many across the political spectrum are criticizing Fernandez’s decision. By Wednesday afternoon, a hashtag was trending on Twitter. It’s #CFKVerguenzaMundial, or Fernandez’s world shame.

Macri beat Fernandez’s chosen successor in the Nov. 22 election.
