NEW YORK, May 20 (UPI) — Marina Abramovic, the New York-based artist who inspired Jay Z’s “Picasso Baby” video, doesn’t quite say she ‘regrets’ consenting to the partnership, which she called a “one-way transaction,” but assures that she’ll never repeat it.
Abramovic gave Hov permission to adapt her 2010 MoMA exhibition, The Artist Is Present, for the video on one condition: “that he would help my institute,” she told Spike magazine, “which he didn’t.”
“I am very pissed by this,” she said.
The failed partnership began on a hopeful note. The performance artist presented her case to Jay Z, asking him to grant support to her upcoming institute in exchange for permissions. The rapper allegedly agreed, but never followed through.
“Then he completely used me,” she said. “And that wasn’t fair.”
Working with the hip-hop mogul left a bad taste in the Serbian artist’s mouth. Abramovic, who has successfully collaborated with Lady Gaga on many occasions, said when it comes to “economical transactions” like that with Mr. Carter, she will “never do it again.”
“Never,” she repeated. “It’s so cruel, it’s incredible. I will stay away from it for sure.”
