A’s Sonny Gray carries no-hit bid through 7 against Texas

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sonny Gray has not allowed a hit through seven innings of his opening-night start for the Oakland Athletics against the Texas Rangers.

Gray had allowed only two baserunners Monday night at the Oakland Coliseum. He hit a batter with a pitch in the third inning, and A’s left fielder Ben Zobrist dropped Leonys Martin’s sinking liner for a two-base error in the sixth.

Prince Fielder hit a sharp liner to start the seventh but it went straight to right fielder Craig Gentry. Moments later, second baseman Eric Sogard made a sliding stop on a hard-hit grounder by Adrian Beltre. Gray then struck out Shin-Soo Choo.

The 25-year-old Gray needed only 83 pitches to get through seven innings as the A’s tried to snap a 10-game losing streak on opening day, a major league record.

Zobrist backed Gray with a two-run homer in the first making his A’s debut, and Oakland added two more runs in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
